Actually the sentence tells us the following: it is good sometimes complaining . However, this will not bring us anything of serious or substantial in the argument.

Competitive clearly is out of scope

The debate coach expected some gravitas from her team, arguing that pi [#permalink]
GPT tells us the followings.

The logic in this sentence involves contrasting the preferred style or approach in making an argument. The debate coach expects a certain demeanor or tone in the argument, and this expectation is explained by contrasting it with the use of "pithy quips and gibes."

"Pithy quips and gibes" are mentioned to highlight a contrasting style - one that is quick, clever, possibly humorous, but lacking in depth or seriousness. The coach argues that while such remarks can be effective in certain situations, they are not appropriate for a specific type of argument, which is the essence of the blank to be filled.

Considering this, the appropriate word for the blank should contrast with the style of "pithy quips and gibes," emphasizing seriousness and depth in an argument. Hence, the correct answer is D. serious or F. substantive.

In the context of the sentence, the debate coach is looking for a particular quality in the argument put forth by the team. The coach is arguing against the use of "pithy quips and gibes," implying that such remarks are not suitable for a certain type of argument.

"Substantive" is the correct choice because it accurately conveys the opposite of the implied shallow or superficial nature of "pithy quips and gibes." "Substantive" means having a firm basis in reality and being meaningful, significant, or important. In this context, the coach is advocating for a more meaningful and serious approach to argumentation, contrasting with the use of clever but potentially superficial remarks.
