Re: The existence of multiple forms of intelligence has become a [#permalink]

The existence of multiple forms of intelligence has become a(n) (i)____, but however much elite universities like to sprinkle their incoming classes with a few actors or violinists, they select for and develop only one form of intelligence, the analytic, and tend to (ii)____the value of others.
Blank (i)
Keyword -> "but however" indicating a change in direction - opposite. Since the blank is coming before the keyword, and we dont have much info about the preceding part to understand the existence of multiple forms of intelligence, lets look at the succeeding part i.e. "much elite universities like to sprinkle their incoming classes with a few actors or violinists" - giving a indication despite something, elite universities do this
I felt this was a bit challenging, I inserted the options and tried to gauge which option would be suitable to match with the change this direction change.
Firstly "anomaly" and "privilege" seem to be have similar meaning in this context relating to a few, chosen. Secondly, they dont fit in with the change of direction.

"commonplace" indicates despite the this form of intelligence is common, the elite universities like to sprinkle ....

Option (ii) - how I understood it: since the objective of elite universities is to develop multiple forms of intelligence. They try to mix up the crowd with actors and violinists. Being actors and violinsts, other forms of intelligence is present. Thus the elite universities try to focus on the "analytic" aspect and =>"ignore" the development of others

For blank(iii):
One naturally prizes what one most possesses, but social intelligence and emotional intelligence and creative ability, to name just three other forms, are not distributed (iii)___among the educational elite.
=>this seems straightforward from the options itself.
First hint "haphazard" and "random" have similar meanings, second wrt the context, it is indicating that possessing such forms is not privileged/a specialty among the elite

I picked and chose from the options and used Process of Elimination to get the answer. The second blank is the easiest. Haphazard and Random are similar so eliminate and preferentially made sense and for the first blank, commonplace is correct as it goes with the contrast that however provides. Its common but still only a few are limited to elite academies which only prefer analytical skills and ignore the rest
