Conceptually, the only way that the proportion can work where if the number of apples is cut in half and the number of oranges is raised by half is if the cost of the apples and oranges is the same. However, to prove the relationship you can also set up the algebra. In this case, we know that 100a + 150o = j (john's money) = 50a + 225o.
100a + 150o = 50a + 225o
-50a -150o = -50a -150o
50a = 75o
Multiply each side of the equation by 2 to find that 100a = 150o. So the quantities are equal, select Choice C.
