We can solve this using a table:
Time: # of internet surfers
0 months : \(10^3\)
3 months : \((10^3)(2)\)
6 months : \((10^3)(2)(2)\)
9 months : \((10^3)(2)(2)(2)\)
12 months : \((10^3)(2)(2)(2)(2) = (10^3)(2^4)\)
