A) Public intellectuals often speak about topics that they would better have avoided due to their lack of background knowledge in those subjects.

Such a person must be careful, he must be aware of the limitations of his knowledge,

They have limitation but the passage does not mention they have a complete LACK of knowledge. Hence, A is wrong

B) Public intellectuals have a duty to share their expertise with the public.

Such an intellectual is often speaking about things beyond his or her area of expertise.

That means they have no duty because sometimes they have no expertise at all. Hence, B is wrong

C) The words of public intellectuals are often accepted unquestioningly by their audiences.

He has enormous power to influence and change, and he must wield that power with respect.

They have a great influence. So C is correct

Official Explanation

(D) Striving (putting effort toward) is used by the author to convey people’s attempt to understand. He implies this by emphasizing the powerful influence that a public intellectual has on his audience. Since the intellectual is imparting knowledge on the public, it makes sense that the public views the figure as their attempt or striving, to understand.

Sorry but I did not get this,
As A is also a contender for answer, as if we notice no where in the passage it is clearly mentioned about humanity or serving the public.

Carcass, 1. can you please explain why C is not correct for Q11? In the passage, it is stated that 'he must acknowledge his personal prejudices because he is being asked to speak for a whole realm of thought, and he must be aware of the huge possible consequences of what he says and writes and does. ' 2. What strategies to develop to tackle inference questions? For example, when I am reading articles from Economist or reading books, what are some of the strategies should I follow to develop relevant habits?

EXPLANATION OF THE PASSAGE

The public intellectual is one who has become elevated to a symbol, a person that stands for something far larger than the discipline from which he or she originated.

A professor , for example, is an important figures for his/her ideas. Therefore he is elevated as a symbol of wise. He or she represents something more than his/her specific field of study or interest

Such an intellectual is often speaking about things beyond his or her area of expertise.

already stated in my previous phrase

Some people will refuse such an invitation, others will accept the opportunity that has been given them.

Some people absorb or incorporate that lessons but other do not. for several reasons.

Such a person must be careful, he must be aware of the limitations of his knowledge, he must acknowledge his personal prejudices because he is being asked to speak for a whole realm of thought, and he must be aware of the huge possible consequences of what he says and writes and does.

However, we have to keep in mind two things

1) His knowledge is limited even though it is vast
2) what the public intellectual says can reverberate for a long time due to its consequences

He has become, in a sense, public property because he represents something large to the public.

He somehow is hostage of the audience he impacts whit his declarations

He has become an idea himself, a human striving.

He can be seen as a concept

He has enormous power to influence and change, and he must wield that power with respect.

he has a lot of power and this power should be administered wisely

EXPLANATION QUESTION #2

He has become, in a sense, public property because he represents something large to the public. He has become an idea himself, a human striving. He has enormous power to influence and change, and he must wield that power with respect.

11. The author uses the word “striving” primarily in order to

A) underscore the effort necessary for public intellectuals to adequately address their topics

No. that word is not there to tell us that the public intellectual struggle to explain a topic

B) explain the belief held by the public that public intellectuals are infallible sources of knowledge

They are perfect. Not, At all. Nothing says that in the passage

C) emphasize the care that public intellectuals must use due to their stature

Nothing in the passage talks about a care. They have power, and they must use it wisely. But nothin is mention about care

D) convey the idea that public intellectuals represent the attempt of humanity to understand their world

This is correct. When the passage mentions that they are an idea themselves, this means that they are something really big and the other people must have an effort to understand them

E) indicate that public intellectuals, despite their prominence, are subject to the same difficulties as the rest of humanity

Nothing in the passage mentions that they are in the end human beings
