(D) Striving (putting effort toward) is used by the author to convey people’s attempt to understand. He implies this by emphasizing the powerful influence that a public intellectual has on his audience. Since the intellectual is imparting knowledge on the public, it makes sense that the public views the figure as their attempt or striving, to understand.

Sorry but I did not get this,
As A is also a contender for answer, as if we notice no where in the passage it is clearly mentioned about humanity or serving the public.
