I believe the approach here is to focus on:
1. keywords - "solving nature's mysteries"
2. "," couple with "instead"- creating a contrast
i.e. the primary purpose intended for the study of biology was the solve or demystify or entangle nature's mysteries. But it is being used to emphasize these mysteries .
So we are looking for a word which implies mysteries, may not be in a direct sense, but show some form of byzantine"ness", complication etc. Thus - "intricacy" and "complexity" makes sense
