A cube has 6 square faces. Each face has an area of (x + 4)².
The total surface area of the cube, then, will be 6*(x+4)². Hence:
6*(x+4)² = 294
Start by dividing by 6:
(x+4)² = 49
Take the square root of both sides:
x + 4 = 7
Subtract 4:
x = 3
