Looking after so many years to thsi specific question, not sure why I said D is the answer.

The answer is E, clearly and the clue is in the word broadly.

Before, the word was broadly or widely, and now its meaning is even wider than before. Therefore, its meaning is amorphous or difficult to pinpoint.

However, I know that E reflects what the sentence wants to convey but is the entire structure of the sentence and what is the meaning that is still unclear to me.

In other words, this kind of sentence or question, what are they testing? what logic ? what is the real intent of this sentence ?

Unclear to me. I do not think it is a real GRE question, or to some extent, I do not know the validity of it.

I agree that the structure and logic is not of optimal standard..

The answer E, as being "amorphous" seems more apt over here, mainly because the sentence follows with "ever".
