The Tunguska explosion was a powerful explosion that occurred in central Siberia in 1908 near the Tunguska River. A powerful, unexplained explosion would give rise to apocalyptic (predictive of disaster and destruction of biblical proportions) visions. For Blank 2, superstitious is the only possible choice. Affluent means wealthy, and sedulous means hard-working and attentive. The emphasis in the passage is on destruction, so it’s logical that the reindeer were instantaneously incinerated (burned). They wouldn’t have survived unscathed. Finally, the reindeer wouldn’t have caused many fatalities; the blast did.
