America was in its sixth decade of “affirmative action,” the (i) ________ ensuring equity of result by (ii) ________ race and gender—but not class—in hiring and admissions. Proportional representation and disparate impact continued or were even enhanced.

America was in the sixth decade of ensuring equity of result... They did in race and gender but not in class so it means that they made adjustments to the process with it.

For the first blank we can say that "affirmative action" was a kind of expression.

Euphemism of & caliberating

But they became (iii) ________ as entire fields from the Postal Service to professional sports were somehow exempt from racial set-asides applied to others. Quotas disappeared when the marginalized were “overrepresented” in a field.

Here, we can see the contrast that some categories are exempted hence the assurance of equity of result becomes selective.

increasingly selective

Got BE

"But they became (iii) ________ "

Who are they here?

A bit muddled for me.
