Working alone at her constant rate, Danya takes 2 hours to paint 1/2 a wall. Working alone at her constant rate, Aurelie takes 3 hours to paint 2 walls of the same size. If Danya starts painting a wall on her own for 3 hours, and is then joined by Aurelie, for how many hours will Aurelie and Danya now have to work together to finish 3 walls? Write your answer as a fraction.
I see this question on Youtube but I didn't understand the solution. If anyone can explain the answer, thank you so much.
Lets' start by calculating the rate of Dania and Aureile.
Dania per hour rate = 1/4
Aureile per hour rate = 2/3
The per hour rate of both = 1/4 + 2/3 = 11/12
Then the question said that Danya worked for 3 hours. The amount of work done by Danya in 3 hours is 3/4. They have to finish 3 walls. Remaining work is 3-3/4 and it is equal to 12/11. We have subtracted Danya work from 3 because she has to paint three walls with Aureile. If she has to paint one wall with Aureile then we must have subtracted from 1.
To calulate the number of hours they have to work together to finish 3 wall = remaining work/per hour rate of both = 9/4 / 11/12 it is 27/11.
I hope it helps.
