Kudos for the right answer and explanation
Many students will incorrectly conclude that the two quantities are equal here. This WOULD be true IF it were the case that lines 1 and 2 were parallel.
However, since we're giving no such information, there's no way to determine the sum of x + y.
Answer: D

The Figure (unlike the real GRE) was kind enough to mention that figure is not drawn to scale and hence giving away the answer. Which implies that the lines are not Parallel. Therefore Answer Option D is the best Answer Choice.
