which means that the listeners would hear him for hours his digression or I.E. speak of something else what is the real argument yet he was fascinating in his digression
Now if we think that he started to digress the first blank must be B because he was speaking extempore or for the moment= digressing
Moreover, they would not be distracted or cut out by the sudden illness of the host
Ask if still not clear the sentence

The main contention here is with second blank where attenuated and abridged both are fitting. Attenuated because it means to reduce something by force (here force being sudden illness) and abridge means to make a writing concise. Now, as the extempore was digressed because of host illness, so it didnt turn out to be concise rather reduced forcefully because of the illness. Therefore, attenuated is better choice here.
