The sense is that they would listen his digression even for hours IF not the same digression was not shortened or abridged by the sudden illness.

I.E the illness abridged the event that they had been listening to him for hours.

The illness arose and they cut short.

The event was NOT ATTENUATED or softened but was reduced in its length overtime
