Let's denote the original price per square foot as P.
The area of the first carpet (10 feet by 12 feet) is 10 × 12 = 120 square feet.
The area of the second carpet (6 feet by 8 feet) is 6 × 8 = 48 square feet.
According to Joe, the sales price for the larger carpet (10 feet by 12 feet) after the discount equals the original price for the smaller carpet (6 feet by 8 feet).
The sales price for the larger carpet is 120 × (1 − discount) = P × 48.
Solving for the discount:
120 × (1 − discount) = P × 48.
1 − discount = 48/120(fraction)
discount = 1 − 48/120(fraction)
discount = 72/120(fraction) = 3/5(fraction)
discount = 0.6
So, Quantity A (Percent discount offered by the store) is equal to Quantity B (60%).
The answer is (C) The two quantities are equal.
