The sentence is about religious people who do two opposite things:
✅ They follow all the technical rules of their religion
❌ BUT they do something bad to the basic moral principles
We need words that mean 'going against' or 'breaking' to show this contradiction. Two words fit perfectly:
Breaching (like breaking a promise)
Contravening (like breaking a rule)
Both these words help explain how someone could claim to follow a religion while actually going against its basic principles. That's why they're both correct answers!
