A certain taxi charges $ 0.85 for the first \(\frac{1}{2}\) mile and $ 0.25 for every \(\frac{1}{2}\) mile after that. The total cost of a trip was $ 8.85.

Quantity A
Quantity B
The trip’s distance in miles
16

A) Quantity A is greater.
B) Quantity B is greater.
C) The two quantities are equal.
D) The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.

make an equation ...
let the distance be x miles after first 1/2 mile.. so there are 2x half miles
cost = \(0.85+2x*0.25=8.85.......0.5x=8......x=16\)

A. total distance = \(16+\frac{1}{2}\)
B. 16

A>B

Hi,

I did it by using the equation:
8.85 = 0.85 + 0.25(x-1/2)
x = 32.5 miles.

Can someone tell me why this is wrong?

Our focus is to solve the question. However, the normal path is to set up an equation like above by amorphous and from that to solve

However, it is just a matter of a simple proportion

IF we spend 0.50 dollars or a half dollar for 1 mile with 8 dollars how many miles wd o have ?

1:0.5=8:x

Solve for x this simple proportion and we do have 16 so the answer should be C

BUT we do have an additional half-mile so is 16+0.5=16.5

This is how much the taxi charged for the entire trip

A > B

Hope this helps

Hi There!

I am not great with equations, let me try this one. The mistake in your equation is that 0.25 should be multiplied by 2 or 8 should be divided by 2.

The reason being we are calculating value for every 1 mile and not every 1/2 mile.

As you assumed let x be the total distance.
0.25 is the cost for 1/2 mile whereas we need the value of 1 mile.
Thus the value of travelling 1 mile=0.25+0.25=0.5

8= 0.5(x-1/2)
Solving for x we get 16.5

And as x is the total distance Qty A=16.5

Qty A>Qty B

Hope this helps

Let x= number of 1/2 miles after first 1/2mile
0.85+ 0.25(x)= 8.85
0.25(x) = 8.85-0.85
x= 8/0.25 , x= 32
Number of 1/2 miles after first is 32
Total distance = 1/2 +1/2(32)= 16.5 miles

Quantity A is greater
