Types of GRE score to get a good professor with fund [#permalink] New post   27 May 2016, 15:52
I heard that there is a professors favorite 'balanced' score ( difference between verbal and quant is 7-13) and not much favorite 'unusual' score (like in quant 164 and verbal 145) kind of thing. The latter one isn't that much good for funding .Is it true?

I am a bit confused.
Asking for some experienced opinion.

Hi and welcome to Greprep club

Shortly answer to your question. YES

They professors and the committee as whole would prefer a balanced score. Regardless your school target.

A balanced score reflects your skills or measurements in terms of logical reasoning both on quant and verbal side, and your vocabulary.

Moreover, if your target school is Engineering for instance, a good quant score is advisable of course but what if your verbal side is weak ?? this guy is proficient in english language ?? after all, w,e talk via words not formulas or numbers.

Hope the concept is clear to you.

So , how can you define a "balanced score"? my definition (7-13 difference) was correct?

Pretty much clear: a good AND balanced score is in the range of 75 percentile.As such, the score is the combination of the two sections, so 130+160=300 and in my opinion 160 in the verbal section of the test. Actually, GRE is an english test not math. Plus at least 4.5 in AWA

Thanks a lot. :)
And of course i believe its an english test. But the professors give priority to the GRE sections score according to the subject one will study. Well i am an engineering student. So from those who have already given GRE and conducted with professors i came to know they want quant score around 160s. But this 'balanced' scoring thing is a bit complicated and have made me realize i have to study both sections with the same effort.

Hi Rysu11,

I will try to tackle this question from my experience. GRE is consisting of two tests: Quants and English. You are absolutely right about Professors wanting balanced score (160+ in both quant and verbal). The reason is explained below:
  • Quant marks should be high because you are being recruited for research due to your good analytical skills and aptitude. Quants section is a representative of your analytical skills and aptitude. A low quant score regardless of any verbal score is a death knell to your application. This is a no brainer.
  • Hoowever, I have seen may of my friends and juniors doing this mistake of taking the verbal lightly. The reason Professors look for students with good verbal skills is because in research your capability of writing succinct and coherent scientific papers is equally important to your research skills. If you do excellent research and pretty bad at conveying those results, it will diminish the value of your contribution. At the end of the day your research is as good as your written report.
  • In addition to that, students in US has to take extensive Teaching assistantship to help the professors who are not that bothered or interested in taking courses to undergraduates. So the professors will try to recruit students with good verbal skills to teach the bachelor students.

Therefore, a good verbal score is equally important in getting a position in an university.
