Re: Little is known about the elusive section of the earths atmosphere kn [#permalink]
Quote:
QUESTION 1

The passage describes the mesosphere as elusive, poorly understood, and little explored. The answer closest to this is choice (C), unfamiliar. Although the passage states that spectacular explosions can occur within the mesosphere, it does not say that the mesosphere itself is destructive. Choices (A), (B), (D), and (E) are never mentioned in the passage.

Sir Carcass,
Isn't the passage mentioning that little is known about the mesophere? It means to some extent it has been known about. So unfamiliar is out. Opaque seems better option given the extent to which the mesophere has been studied.

In this case the key element to take into account is "the knowledge"

when we know a few or we do have not so much information about, we say that the argument is unfamiliar NOT opaque

Opaque is the glass of a window when you do not have a clear view through.

I hope this helps

Unfamiliar seems an unsuitable word as an answer choice, possibly an extreme type, because if something is known to some extent (i.e. not completely unknown) then that thing cannot be regarded as unfamiliar.

If something is unfamiliar to you, you know nothing or very little about it, because you have not seen or experienced it before.

Nuances! ETS thinks as if all test-takers are native English speakers : :)

Look sir

here is the deal: the GRE is an exam administered in the entire world. However, it is one of the most prominent exam in UNITED STATES to get into the MBA in US, or in other programs in US, mainly for students in US.

Nonetheless, the GRE or also GMAT or LSAT are exams you need to get into a School (whatever it might be) at ACADEMIC level.

MBA, MS, PhD are all courses and programs AFTER graduation therefore advanced. Of course, it is NOT mandatory you know those nuances but they expect you should. Otherwise those exams would not exist.

Alike is for TOEFL and IELT. Wanna go in US or US contries English related go for the First one. You want to go in countries British/Australian related go for the latter.

These are the rules sir. No exceptions
