How would 18 be A and not 'E'?

If the flock is flying east initially and a storm blows them southwards they are now flying in a south eastern direction, correct?

Now if the flock has no idea and it assumes it's flying east (based off what it understood when it started flying) then it'd continue flowing in the same direction, which is now southeast due to the storm.

Can anyone explain if my logic is correct and if it isn't where I went wrong? Thanks.

But compass sense alone cannot explain how birds navigate the ocean: after a flock traveling east is blown far south by a storm, it will assume the proper northeasterly course to compensate

Think this way, they fly east which is the zero point, straight.

A storm pushes the flock to far south so in terms of dislocation is minus (negative ) 5

They then move too far north to compensate the -5. so in the end back on track to zero

Northeasterly compensates the far south. back on the balance

A is the answer

My Understanding - Take out the compensation factor. Then the birds should be flying eastward and end up south of its intended destination. So answer is East - A

Carcass, for q18, why it is east but not north?

The bird will be blown to north to compensate south. How the bird will end up in the east?

The black pointer. When you say northeast it is essentially toward more the east than the north

Carcass, can you please explain why it is northeasterly? Where did you get it in the passage?
