I think you missed the point

The sentence says

Nevertheless, a cure continues to elude scientists, as research continually churns up, inspires hope with, and then slowly inters seemingly endless causes, correlations, diagnostic methods, and possible cures.

A cure is far, the research is in constant evolution, giving hope, and the research is a mix of : causes , correlations, methods to pinpoint the causes and possible new avenues of cures.

Instead E is

(E) causes and manifestations of the disease are most likely various and multiple.

causes and evidence of the disease are in different forms

As you can see the two statements are diametrically different
