The second half of the first paragraph lists the reasons why the Soviet Union, Britain, and the United States, respectively, had something to gain from the deportations. Each of the answer choices above undermines one of these reasons. Note the “if true” in the question stem. You are being asked to momentarily take each answer choice as a fact, and then determine whether that fact would weaken an argument from the passage. “If true” questions can sometimes ask you imagine that wacky or unlikely things are true — don’t let that distract you from the task at hand.

Quote:
The Soviet Union, intent on capitalizing politically on German’s defeat, aimed to irrevocably undermine relations between Germany and Poland, especially by ceding German territory to Poland and emptying it of its inhabitants.

The Soviet Union here is stated that the aim was to undermine the relationships between the two countries. II instead says the exact contrary. So. it is also a correct answer choice because weakens what is stated in the passage.

Hope this helps

Here, you should stress all the answers individually seeking a satisfactory rejection or acceptance from the text direcetly.
The consequence of the deportation was the creation of homogenious mass in Germany. Therefore, the first answer would weaken the argument, because deportations can not result homogeneity. For the second answer, you should, as I said, look meticulously in the text. From the first read, you should have known the sentences that needs your attention for the second answer. Since the text says that the deportation undermined the relation between Poland and Germany, the second answer is applicable, because Soviet can not improve trade relations via the undermined deportations. The third answer is the easiest one, because it immedietly weakens the argument.

QOTD # 29 The atrocities committed during the Second World W [#permalink]
Hi guys, thanks for posting the answers. I have a doubt about question 2.

* Here I understood the first option which says, the US believed that deportation would lead to mixed cultures hence that would undermine the passage's claim "that the US wants to keep Soviet away from the Eastern and Central Europe".

* I couldn't relate the other two options in the same way as above. How Soviet emptying Germany's territory would benefit the former in post-trade relation b/w Germany-Poland. It's not making logical sense to me. The same goes for the third option. Can anyone please explain?

This question can be addressed even without reading the passage

Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

Some events that occurred during World War II do not appear in history books.
very difficult to believe that something is not in the books

The Allied powers included the Soviet Union, Britain, the United States, and Poland.

Poland was not part of the allies

The Allied powers were not entirely unified on political matters.

Must be true because the winner had different political interests

C is the answer

Regarding the First Question, In the second paragraph, it is stated that

Quote:
That this episode is practically excised from the history books in some countries, however, is surely corroboration of the platitude that history is written by the victors.

Doesnt this provide sufficient evidence for option A ? Also, could you please point out evidence in the paragraph which supports option C ?

* The first option of question 1 states that "Some events that occurred during World War II do not appear in history books." The word during is the key to avoid the first option. The passage clearly mentions that the deportation events are taking place after 2 years of World War II.

* For option C, if you read the second paragraph from the line "The Allied powers, too, had something to gain." till the end, you'll know that every allied nation had different intentions politically.

Which is basically what I pointed out in my answer/explanation
