In the passage: "Their views and their lives were full of contradictions. They maintained female social networks but began to integrate women into mainstream politics; they demanded equal treatment but also argued that women’s maternal responsibilities made them both wards and representatives of the public interest."
So, this sentence from the passage shows E is correct.

summary:
para 1: Roosevelt wife despite of her works in social context was only seen as a president's wife
para 2: Her works began to furnish and her identity began to be identified

A1: (A) Changes in the way in which Eleanor Roosevelt’s life is understood - since the paragraph is written all about the Eleanor and her identity coming out of her husbands shadow

A2: (C) An account of the legislative career of a conservative senator which showed his goals to have been derived from a national conservative movement of which the senator was a part -
eliminated option b and e as they talk about multiple people
eliminated option a as the article wasn't about the activities
eliminated option d as the protagonist ideals doesn't align with the life she brought up in

A3: (E) Her activism predated her husband’s presidency and her projects differed from his. - refer to para 1, though she has been involved in social reforms before she became the president's wife, she has been known as the later social status

A4: (B) Their policies identified them as idiosyncratic. - "idiosyncratic" or uniqueness of a thing was specially associated to Eleanor as a president's wife
