This sentence originally posits that there is “no fundamental difference” between two things, but the overall point is that the two things do look different on the surface. That means you want something that does the opposite of “spews chauvinist vitriol on television,” such as something that quietly expresses it. A good fill-in would be communicates. Denies and reneges (renounces or denies) are an incorrect pair. Eschews is also pretty close to that pair. Substantiates, meaning “to support or verify,” goes beyond communicates and is too positive to go with “a bigoted viewpoint.”
