An international development organization, in response to a vitamin A deficiency among people in the impoverished nation of Tagus, has engineered a new breed of millet high in vitamin A. While seeds for this new type of millet cost more, farmers will be paid subsidies for farming the new variety of millet. Since millet is already a staple food in Tagus, people will readily adopt the new variety. To combat vitamin A deficiency, the government of Tagus should do everything it can to promote this new type of millet.
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
The crux of the argument is that the government of Tagus should do everything it can to promote the new type of millet which the international development organisation has engineered in order to eradicate the vitamin A deficiency .The author takes for granted some of the assumptions.
Firstly, the author assumes that people will buy new variety of millet despite government recommendation. If Tagus are habituated with the old type of millet and do not want to try and consume new variety of millet then notwithstanding government recommendation people do not consume the new millet.
Secondly, the author assumes that Vitamin A deficiency can be eradicated if people adopt new variety. What if there were no sufficient Vitamin A in new variety of millet and what if the people consuming the millet in such a amount that they do not get enough Vitamin A.
Finally farmers will plant the new variety of millet despite the high cost of seed and subsidy of government. What if subsidies provided by government would be significant enough so that farmers affords and plants new variety.
There fore the argument to be more strong it should also include that people would consume new variety if government makes a recommendation and Vitamin A deficiency can be resolved if people consume in present quantities or they will increase the consumption if required the millet significantly so that the Vitamin deficiency in country can be eradicated and finally farmers will plant new variety of millet.
