Claim: Governments must ensure that their major cities receive the financial support they need in order to thrive.
Reason: It is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated.
Major cities are the heart and soul of a country; they are always the most populated having an intricate network of traffic, schools, institutions, subways etc. However, the claim that governments should fund major cities financially because it is primarily in cities that a nation’s cultural traditions are preserved and generated is false.
Even though rural areas might have lesser people, they are living a rustic life away from the modernization seen in big cities. There is no significant data backing the statement that villages do not preserve cultural traditions. In fact, a simple life away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities helps maintain the age-old traditions. It is easier to find time to celebrate festivals with the community, easier to follow one’s customs and traditions Opposite to this, people living in the big cities are always so busy that sometimes even finding time to sit down and have a quiet dinner can be difficult. One goes to a big city to find more opportunities, to make money and have a better life. All this is achieved at a price of not having the time to even breathe.
Small villages in India still follow the cultural tradition of living together as a big family, they believe in community living and they have traditions that even the masses living in Delhi or Mumbai are unaware of. For example, the simple act of wearing traditional garments, people living in modern cities dress more urban; adorning jeans, shirts, suits. People in small villages still wear sarees and dhotis, the traditional garb of India for a woman and man respectively.
Some might argue that major cities are a melting pot of people from diverse religion, ethnicity and background bringing even more culture and varied traditions. But, sometimes this also proves to be harrowing, as there exist people who practice extreme religion, who consider their religion to be supreme and better than others leading to disruption in society.
Additionally, governments should allocate their finances to other fundamental aspects of a big city like roads, public transportations, parks, schools, cleaning, museums etc. that will benefit the masses living in the city and not worry about culture preservation, as that is in the hands of the people to preserve their own culture and for them to propagate to their future generations. In conclusion, I disagree with the author’s assertion that government should provide financial support to major cities for culture preservation and generation.
