Mass media and the internet have caused people’s attention spans to get shorter. However, the overall effect has been positive: while people are less able to focus on one thing, they more than make up for it with an enhanced ability to sort through large quantities of information and find what’s important.

Since our childhood we are told to concentrate on one thing as it will help us focus better and will help us to improve our efficiency in performing tasks. In today's world however, where the lifestyle has become so dynamic people are expected to multitask which we are not used to as we cannot concentrate on several different things at once and therefore we miss out on tasks which are important to us and will help us develop.According to the argument the mass media is helping people develop this capability of going through loads of information and then sorting out what is the best of us.
If you are using apps like Instagram and Facebook, you know that it's a platform where everybody and anybody can write what they feel, post what they like and express their opinions as it is a free world. The problem arises when it does not align with what we want to see.So we have to scroll through several posts to find what we like and would normally want to see on our feed. This process can become tedious and could affect our concentration to perform the tasks we feel are important to us.Therefore it hampers our day to day lives. However,in scrolling through that information we might gain knowledge about something else which might prove to be useful in the future. It also makes us efficient in getting rid of all the information we feel is not useful to us.This is a very important quality because in today's world we are exposed to a lot of information and if we do not know what is relevant to us or would be helpful to us in any way in the future,we will be in big trouble because we would be overwhelmed with information and would not know what to do with it.Therefore all this mass media and internet is actually helping us to become efficient in the future.
In being able to sort out the information we also save a lot of time in going through all that information. As the popular saying goes:'Time is money'.I will go a step further and say that time is greater than money. You might make up for your losses but you can not make up for the lost time. You will never get back the time you have wasted. If you are just attending to the information relevant to us rather than testing and and trying out all of it,you save some time for yourself which you can use for your personal development. This will help you a become better person and would also make you more prepared for the future. It is not about the quantity of information you are exposed to but about the quality of it.One more reason why mass media and internet are actually doing more good than bad.
While there are certain advantages to become good at sorting out information there are certain fields where this could actually be harmful. In the field of medicine where where people have to go through a lot of information with almost all the information being of top most importance as it concerns the anatomy of human body. You cannot just sort out out the information because each and every line is important and a drop in concentration would actually be harmful for these aspiring doctors. In the field of politics too you have to be informed about each and every detail because it concerns the nation and the candidate you will be choosing to run the country.Just sorting out information would actually be ignorant.
For all the disadvantages the mass media and internet is actually helping us to become better human beings for the future.
