The author gives a extreme conclusion that no field can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge. While the view is somewhat true in some of the fields but to assume that no field has ever advanced significantly is unwarranted. I is true, however, that the involvement of the outsiders increases the probability of the advancement of a particular field.
To look for an example one can look in the field of astronomy. NASA, one of the leading space research organization, has advanced significantly as best brains around the world worked together on the development of cutting edge technologies. It might not be able to do so as it has done, if NASA has not opened its doors for outsiders. Another example to look is Google, a search engine, has opened its door for outsiders since its inception. Google was able to attract the best talents from around the world, a step that led to its expansion in technology significantly.
Some of the fields such as palentology, however, in which small teams of scientists works has advanced significantly but without the help of outsiders. They were able to analyze the findings by themselves. They did not took the help of outsiders. Another example is Behavioral economics, in which only a few economists of USA has discovered and advanced the filed without any merit of outsiders.
Outsiders when work in a particular filed, increase the number of people who can work together on a particular problem. When they listen to each other views, their scope increases. It helps not only in advancement of a field but also in the reduction of the time that would be more if there were no outsiders. For example, Indian Space Research Organization, ISRO, was able to expand slowly and its scope was somewhat limited but when helped by Russians, it was able to improve significantly.
In the field of Philosophy, which was arguably invented in ancient greek, philosophers were able to come up with a better version of philosophy, in many cases centuries later, with the help of outsiders. Philosophers then were able to make their theories more solid proof when posed questions by outsiders.
In sum, outsiders will help in any field, making the progress faster and efficient but to assumption that no field has even advance significantly is obscure.
