A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. Education is a powerful tool that the nation provides for the future generations to be prosperous. An appropriate method to make education more effective would be to bring a common curriculum to the nation. By executing this plan we can ensure that education is received in a fair manner to all and the competition is also indifferent.
First, education has to be equal and there should be no bias in this, such as better education for the privileged people and mediocre education for the less privileged. By bringing common education to all, it can be ensured that all the students in the entire nation receive quality education. For example, in a developing nation where there is huge difference between people on their economic statuses, the rich would go to a bigger and expensive school and the poor would go to a school to which they can afford. Now, the smaller or schools giving cheaper education may not be equal to those of bigger schools, atleast in terms of teaching methods. By imposing same curriculum the education becomes same for all. Since there is one education for all, government ensures that it would be the best curriculum and all teaching aids such as audio visuals, models etc would be provided by the government to all schools making education unbiased to all.
In the teachers’ point of view, a uniform education for the nation would be beneficial for them too. It could be easier for them to discuss and exchange materials in various meetings and in forums. A common national forum could be introduced online ,where teachers share their teaching experiences, methods and could post queries. This would develop a strong networking among the teachers of the nation and also increase their interest. For example, when a teacher posts his/her experience on taking their students to a field trip to understand a particular topic or sharing a video of a lecture on how a certain topic could be applied in real life situations, it might inspire others to do the same or some may give suggestions of other methods too. Hence, uniform curriculum benefits the students and also helps to inspire the teachers in many ways.
Another advantage of a common syllabus for the whole country would be that, scholarships which are given based on marks obtained in school will be given to the right person. When students come from different curriculums it is difficult to know those which were harder and those which had lesser standards and a common curriculum eradicates this problem. In addition to this, students appearing for entrance exams to enter college will all have same level of difficulty as they have all studied the same curriculum. For example in a nation of common curriculum when students appear for a national level entrance exam, the marks obtained is only based on their own talent and not based on the standard of curriculum, since they have all studied in the same curriculum.
For a common curriculum to be followed in the entire nation there are a few other points to be considered so that all are benefited from it. The national curriculum should include the extra curricular activities also, atleast some of the basics such as certain sport, art and music should be taken to account and made compulsary to all schools. Government should ensure that all schools have facilities to provide them and if not, provide financial aid for them. Another important issue to be considered in common education is education for physically challenged. Those extra facilities required for their education should be provided by the government and should come to force atleast in one or two schools per city.
Common curriculum can therefore be beneficial to all and can help bring a nation to a better level since all are exposed to a good education. The entire system of education including students, teachers and management can be benefited. For everyone to be satisfied with the system, extra curriculum and handicapped students should also be considered.
