Discussing controversial topics with those with contrasting views is not useful because very few people change their mind when questioned about their core beliefs.
Write a response to the prompt in which you discuss whether or not you agree or disagree. Be certain to fully develop your position and carefully consider ways in which your position could be challenged.
The argument presents a view that would be true at some level for some people, but not definitly true for all. One thing that impede me from totally support this argument is the "all or nothing" impression it gives.
It is undeniable that very few people will change their views easily, especially when it comes to their core beliefs. In some certain aspect, a root of the beliefs is very deep and sometimes it is real for them. Religion is one good example of this. It is obvious that the beliefs of being how to be a good wife between Chiristianism, Musilmism and Budhism are different. Plus, people who hold one of these religious tend to be teach and foster the value of the beliefs since they were young, and their family as well as their society shape those beliefs deeply into their mind which sometimes one cannot differentiate which one is a belief and which one is a logical reason since they are blended together. Therefore, it is not wrong to say that, especially when it comes to a sensitive aspect or a core belief, the discussing is not very useful as people are not likely to changed thier mind.
However, since we are talking about people in overall, there are so various types of people out there in this world. More and more people are becoming more open-mined than in the past. Thanks to our diversity society and the globalization. Some type of people is not so judgy. They tend to be open to others' differences, if it is not hit them too much. Thus knid of people might grow up in a diverse society. They would have a lot of friends which come from different backgrounds. As a result, they are somehow get accustomed to the disimilarness of people. For some certain aspects of the discussion, something would pop up and make they change their mind while other discussion would just be another discover about how this person in front of them think.
In conclusion, the discussion of controversial topics could bring a number of both benefits and drawbacks. It depends on how one reacts and what one can learn about this contrast. The argument claims that it is "not useful" because people are not likely to chamge their mind. However, in my opinion, the usefulness is not about whether we change our mind or not. It is more about how we understand these different beliefs and how we live with these different people happily.
