An international development organization, in response to a vitamin A deficiency among people in the impoverished nation of Tagus, has engineered a new breed of millet high in vitamin A. While seeds for this new type of millet cost more, farmers will be paid subsidies for farming the new variety of millet. Since millet is already a staple food in Tagus, people will readily adopt the new variety. To combat vitamin A deficiency, the government of Tagus should do everything it can to promote this new type of millet.
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
Response:
In the presented argument, author says that "There is a Vitamin A deficiency struck country, Tagus. An international development organisation have developed a new breed of millet, high in Vitamin A. And the government should do everything needful to promote this new type of millet". Here, the author have considered various types of discordant assumptions. Also the obscure solution for the problems provided, is liable for various relevant questions.
Firstly, the author mentioned that the new millet breed is engineered by an international development organization. There is no name given for the international organization, and also there in no bolstering evidence for the approval of this new millet seed. Because of the lacking manifests, the genuineness and edibility of the new millet is a big question.
Also, it is said that the cost of new millet seed is high as compared to the traditional millet seed. So to overcome this price difference, subsidies will be provided. But, still, if after providing enough subsidy to the farmers, seeds have additional maintenance requirement, such as extra water demand, more pesticides and insecticides, poor in resistance against the environmental factors and insect attack, then this will add to the additional cost of farming, which will be an issue. So the information regarding the cultivation needs associated with it is required.
Thirdly, as it is assumed by the author that this new engineered millet will be readily accepted by the people, as the existing millet is already a staple food in Tagus, may be completely wrong. People are always skeptical about the change at first and moreover it is engineered and not natural. What if they would not accept the new millet as supplant for their traditional one. Then, the cultivated crop will be of little or no use and may lead to wastage of huge money as well as scarcity of millet.
Lastly, it is said to have high vitamin A content. But, as it is engineered product, there is a slight chance of having side effects associated with it. So to tackle this problem, the fitness of the new seed is questionable.
Eventually, due to the number of flaws and unanswered questions, the author's argument is not complete, germane and the solution provided is also questionable. For proper solution, there a need of proper canvass, with relevant information and lessen the number of unreliable assumptions.
