Hi! New here, same spiel as in my other post. Would love feedback on my issue essay! Thank you!
" Men and women, because of their inherent physical differences, are not equally suited for many tasks. "
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
Response:
In past and present day United States, there has been a cultural assumption that men and women are suited for different tasks due to differences between the sexes. The current paper will analyze the validity of the proposition that, because of these inherent physical characteristics differentiating the two sexes, men and women are not equally suited for many tasks. Specifically, the paper will address why this line of reasoning is based on flawed and trite stereotypes that do not hold under careful scrutiny. Women have been proven effective across multiple male dominant fields and it has even been shown that modern day men are less physically capable than previous generations. In addition to this, the current paper will dissect the counter argument of men being physically stronger than women, and why that alone is not enough to merit the overarching proposition.
The biological reasoning that surrounds this proposition is clear and quite factual. Men and women are compositionally different in terms of fat content, bone strength and many other attributes. While this is true, the level of physical strength which differentiated men and women is a culturally reinforced trail-down effect of the industrial revolution and previous eras, where the majority of men were working in factories and other forms of intense, muscle-building physical labor. Women were regarded as masters of the home, and housework is primarily composed of aerobic exercise which tones the muscles instead of heavily developing them. Because of the setting that these past generations of men and women worked in, there were considerable, clear-cut muscular differences between the two sexes.
In consideration of this evidence, there are supporting studies which have discussed the power of the average modern day man's hand grip. The study found that there was a considerable difference between today's adult male and the men of previous, hard-labor intensive generations. This evidence strongly supports the idea of culturally enforced physical differences. While men still have a stronger hand grip than women, the between-sex difference is no longer relevant enough to warrant gender segregated physical labor.
Albeit the evidence from countless studies being conducted in present day, there are still those who state that despite how men have changed over time, men are still stronger than women and it is therefore more efficient for men to perform physical labor. While this assertion is based off of facts, the difference between the sexes is no longer warranted. In addition, there is considerable anecdotal evidence within the media, from extremely strong female contestants within this year's Olympics to those who participate in shows such as American Ninja Warrior. While men have a biological advantage of body power in comparison to women, there is simply too much evidence for the above counterargument to hold water.
Lastly, the whole statement that men and women are not equally suited for many tasks has a strong stereotypical basis. Current day entertainment has begun to divert from it, however, for nearly a hundred years in American culture women have been pigeon-holed into being a housewife or in professions typically viewed as not having difficult mental calculation nor physical exertion. There are plenty of anecdotes from the previous generation of women who were told to go to college to find a husband instead of pursuing a career.
In summation, the paper asserts that, given the climate of modern day U.S culture and in combination with the breaking down of traditional gender roles, the physical differences between men and women are not enough to merit the idea that they are not equally suited for many tasks. It is an argument based off of stereotypes which are as logically flawed as they are outdated. Because of the shift from the era of physical labor to a more tech focused industry, the physical changes in the current generation of men in comparison to previous has uncovered an underlying effect of a pervasive societal norm.
