Quote:
All too often, companies hire outside consultants to suggest ways for the company to operate more efficiently. If companies were to spend more time listening to their own employees, such consultants would be unnecessary.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with these statements and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statements might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
A consultant is a person who goes through vigorous training to make shrewd judgments which will benefit the company, they are well aware of the market trends and have a plethora of tried and tested methods which will help the company reach new heights. They often bring new insights in a company and make decisions without displaying any kind of prejudice. For example, when it comes to taking tough decisions, a long term employee of the company will almost always take decisions on the basis of their personal prejudice, they are not capable of taking a disinterested approach in such matters. Having a fresh face, one who has been hired specially to make tough calls to improve the company performance, will almost never display a partisan approach.
On the other hand, in the corporate world there is no alternative to experience. A worker who has been associated with the company for a long time has seen the company at its best and at its worst. They are aware of their client base and the tricks that have kept the company alive all this while. They are bound to use the wisdom they have gained in their years of experience for the betterment of the company when needed. Hence, to say that a consultant alone is enough to make performance altering decisions in a company is also wrong. A long term employee sure tends to have personal prejudices, but they also bring years of experience working with the company. They know the market realities specific to their company and product. They know which methods have been used in the past, which methods had deleterious effects on the organization.
A company needs to understand that taking a single route here, like just relying on a consultant, or just paying attention to employee suggestions is never sufficient. A consultant who has no attachments to the company is bound to come up with some out of place suggestions, a normal employee who is dependent on the company for their bread and butter will no doubt protest these methods which they know won't work for their company. Whereas having a fresh mind (as that of a consultant) look at things from a new perspective will no doubt produce new and different ideas.
A healthy corroboration is extremely vital. A consultant might bring universally acclaimed ideas, they might suggest worldwide extolled business models, but they will never be successful for a company till the time they are not altered specifically to that company's needs. A consultant being a new face in the organization might not be able to do that without the help of the different inputs given by the normal workers. This healthy corroboration will keep both the roles in check and will help the company reach new heights.
