There is no clue but your logic

Basically , the sentence conveys the following meaning

Assouming X was wrong and the compromise (mediation) would have been almost impossible, the attorney was not ready for the eventuality - for the conclusion of that matter in that specific way

Notice how D is tricky but is not possible the inevitability because we are in a scenario in which the fact is already before our eyes.
