In many cases, mechanists did not explicitly respond to vitalists but simply moved forward with their research. Mechanistic operations within organisms are carried out in the internal environment and jointly serve to maintain that environment in a constant state. Because mechanistic operations respond to conditions in the internal environment, they appear (i) ________ when considered only in relation to external stimuli. Moreover, because these mechanisms work to maintain an (ii) ________ internal environment, one could explain the ability of organisms to (iii) ________ physical processes that might otherwise destroy them.

Blank (i) Blank (ii) Blank (iii)
indeterminate relative withstand
blurry uniform permit
endemic unique expedite

Kudos for the right answer, explanation, and clarification of why other answer choices are incorrect.

We have to start from the second blank. From the second sentence, we get to know that the mechanisms serve to maintain a constant state. So, uniform matches best for blank (ii).

For blank(iii), we get information from the third sentence. We get to know that the mechanistic operations respond to the internal environment and appear only when it is considered to external stimuli; that means physical process. And if they don't do something to them that might otherwise destroy them. Therefore, withstand and expedite can't be the choice. So, permit matches best for blank (iii).

For blank (i), mechanistic operations only available to the internal environment only when it is related to external stimuli. Endemic can't be the choice otherwise there should be some keyword in the sentence indicating regularly found. So, indeterminate matches best for blank (i).

Therefore, (A) indeterminate (E) uniform and (G) permit are the right answers.
