Expedient (suitable or advantageous) is the only valid choice for the first blank given that the method is also described as simple and useful. There is no reason to think that it is a bad idea (imprudent) or that it was unnecessary (superfluous).
For the second blank the best choice is E - since the scientists are hopeful for the future of the enzyme it can hardly be dubious (unlikely) that it will be used to cure diseases. Since the scientists are "not yet sure" how exactly it will be used, presumptively (in all likelihood, presumably) is the best fit.
Curing diseases and reprogramming cells is a concrete, not an abstract use of the enzyme. The last blank has to be a word that is similar to possibilities or repercussions: implications.
