The average of a set of six positive numbers is 30.

Quantity A
Quantity B
The average of the numbers in the set after replacing the smallest number in the set with 0
The average of the remaining numbers in the set after removing the smallest number from the set

A) Quantity A is greater.
B) Quantity B is greater.
C) The two quantities are equal.
D) The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.

The set is the same.
The point boils down to the number being discarded. A smaller number being discarded or added

So, the smallest number here will be >0 as all are positive numbers, so when you replace the number with 0, the total will become less than previous and so teh average will also go down.
Now, when you remove the smallest number, the average will never go down. It will remain the same at the least. Don't go by the idea that it will always be less. Because, if all numbers are the SAME, the average will remain the SAME.
It is nowhere given that the numbers are different. You can go wrong if say A was the initial average and B was average after removal of the smallest number..... Here answer will be D and you would choose B wrongly.

so B>A

Hi there,

This question are not created, they are already published in Nova.

As for the ques, not sure what exactly is your point

QTYA : it is mentioned the smallest number is replaced by zero- Since there are 6 positive numbers and the lowest number ( which is greater than zero, because we have 6 positive number) is replaced by zero.

There is enough information to solve

Hope it is clear

Quote:
The average of a set of six positive numbers is 30.

Step 1: Understanding the question
When average of six numbers is 30, the sum of the number is 180

Quote:
Quantity A
The average of the numbers in the set after replacing the smallest number in the set with 0

Step 2: Understanding quantity A
Let smallest positive number be x
Hence, sum of numbers after replacing x in the set with 0 is (180-x)
Average = (180-x)/6

Quote:
Quantity B
The average of the remaining numbers in the set after removing the smallest number from the set

Step 3: Understanding quantity B
um of numbers after removing the smallest number from the set is (180-x)
Average = (180-x)/5

Step 4: Comparing Quantity A Quantity B
(180-x)/6 ------- (180-x)/5
As (180-x) is positive, hence
1/6 ------- 1/5
Quantity B is greater

B is correct
