\(x^2 − y^2\) is the difference between two squares and factors to (x − y)(x + y). Since x + y = 16 and x − y = 8, column A then becomes 16 × 8 = 128. Column B is (x + y)(x + y) which is 16 × 16 = 256. Column B is greater.
