Re: The greatest number of regions into which two straight lines [#permalink]
The max that two lines can cut a plane into is 4 regions. In this case, I can get 4 regions by running horizontal lines through the top and bottom, such that the sides are disconnected.

Does that make sense?

The answer is 5. One line from the top of the big triangle and crossing the bottom left corner of the small triangle. Second line bottom right big triangle and top of the small triangle. Divided into 5.

So, the answer should be A, right?

I am getting at least 5 regions - so the OA should be minimum 5. Why is the answer D then? Kudos if you like this question

Fixed the OA which is A.

This question has conceived a problem solving which is 5 as correct OA.

Then was changed in a QCQ. The principle is the same.

A is the answer

The question asks about the shaded area tho? I think it should be 4 according to the solutions proposed by the previous replies?

The lines divide the shaded area not the shaded area itself

My interpretation of “will divide the shaded region” is “how many regions will the shaded region be divided into”, as there’s no line that could divide only the unshaded region.

The kudos are given for a good explanation or a relevant contribution to the forum NOT a question ?
