There are two approaches to solve this problem, plugging numbers in, or algebraically:
1) Plugging in:
If Joseph ate x=10 cookies, Jane ate 10 (Joseph amount) plus an extra of, let’s say, y= 5 cookies. Finally, Albert ate 3*10 = 30.
Total cookies: Joseph + Jane + Albert = 10 + (10+5) + 30 = 55
Column B = 55
Column A = 5 + 1 + 5*10 = 56
Column A > Column B. Therefore, (A) is the correct answer.
2) Algebraically:
Column B:
Joseph: x
Jane: x+y
Albert: 3*x
Total = 5*x + y
Column A:
5*x + y + 1
Therefore, Column A is one unit bigger than column B, implying that Column A > Column B.
