In a puzzle game, Tran was given the word STRUM. How many unique three-letter arrangements are possible using the letters of the word?
A. 15
B. 60
C. 90
D. 120
E. 240
NOTE: This question isn't well-worded, since it's not clear whether we can use a letter more that once (e.g., SMM) The official answer suggests that NO LETTERS CAN BE REPEATED, so let's go with that.
Take the task of creating 3-letter words and break it into stages.
Stage 1: Choose a letter (from STRUM) for the 1st letter There are 5 letters from which to choose. So, we can complete this stage in 5 ways
Stage 2: Choose a letter for the 2nd letter There are 4 letters REMAINING from which to choose. So, we can complete this stage in 4 ways
Stage 3: Choose a letter for the 3rd letter There are 3 letters REMAINING. So, we can complete this stage in 4 ways
By the Fundamental Counting Principle (FCP), we can complete all 3 stages (and thus create a 3-letter word) in (5)(4)(3) ways (= 60 ways)
Answer: B
Note: the FCP can be used to solve the MAJORITY of counting questions on the GRE. So, be sure to learn it.
