If presented algebra in a non-algebraic format, recognize that the GRE may be attempting to get test-takers to waste time when a more intuitive solution may be available. When presented with variables in the answer choices, always consider if plugging in values may be a more efficient method to solve the problem as is the case here.
Plug in the first value x = -1 to eliminate any choices with functions that do not result in a value of 1
a) -2(1) ≠ 1 | eliminate a
b) 1 + 3 ≠ 1 | eliminate b
c) -1 + 3 ≠ 1 | eliminate c
d) -2 - 3 ≠ 1 | eliminate d
e) -2 + 3 = 1 | keep e
Since, no other choices survived just the first pair of values select choice E confidently without meddling with the exact formulas.
