Re: Three salespeople are paid commissions in proportion to the [#permalink]

Well no guessing work here. Everything is done proportionally so the one with the largest sales is going to get paid the most proportionally to how much he/she contributed.

We know the 1000s will all cancel out so write

60/(25+40+60) = 60/125 = 12/25

which is proportional to how much of the 20k so finally

20 * 12/25 = (5*4*12)/(5*5) = 48/5 which is 9.6 (9*5 = 45 and the remaining 3/5 is .6)

and we know that's in thousands. so $9,600.

Three salespeople are paid commissions in proportion to the amount of their sales, which total $25, 000, $40, 000, and $60, 000, respectively. If a total of $20, 000 is allocated for these three commissions, what is the amount of the largest commission paid?

(A) $8, 000
(B) $8, 400
(C) $9, 600
(D) $10, 000
(E) $12, 000

Kudos for the right answer and explanation

Since we know that 20,000 dollars of commission is based on 125,00 of total revenue, we can create a proportion to determine how much commission is paid on the highest sale of 60,000 dollars.

20,000/125,000 = n/60,000

20/125 = n/60,000

4/25 = n/60,000

240,000 = 25n

9,600 = n
