One tap, working alone at its maximum constant rate, can fill a certain sink in 287 seconds. A second tap, working alone at its maximum constant rate, can fill the same sink in 283 seconds. If both taps work together at their respective maximum constant rates, the time it will take to fill the sink is closest to
(A) 142 seconds
(B) 150 seconds
(C) 177 seconds
(D) 200 seconds
(E) 270 seconds
Note: Although this question isn't an official GRE question, it very well could it be one, because it rewards number sense. Notice that if ONE tap can fill the sink in 287 seconds, then TWO of those taps can fill the sink in HALF the time.
In other words, TWO of the 287-second taps and fill the sink in 143.5 seconds.
So, if we replace one of the 287-second taps with a
slightly faster (283-second) tap, we'll be able to fill the sink in
less than 143.5 seconds
Since only one answer choice is less than 143.5 seconds, the correct answer must be A
