Explanation

Solve this “must be” problem by plugging in values for a and b.

Starting with the simplest allowable values, a = 30 and b = 15, does not eliminate any answer choices.

Next, try a = 100 and b = 0; now choices (A), (B), and (D) can be eliminated. Finally, try a = 30 and b = –30; now choice (E) can be eliminated, leaving only choice (C), which is the correct answer.

A. a − b ≤ 45
B. a − b ≤ 15
C. a − b ≥ 15
D. a + b ≤ 45
E. a + b ≥ 45

In many of the answer choices, we have -b (subtract b)

So let's take: b ≤ 15
And multiply both sides by -1 to get: -b ≥ -15 [aside: Since I multiplied both sides of the inequality by a NEGATIVE number, I had to REVERSE the direction of the inequality symbol]

So we now have the following:
a ≥ 30
-b ≥ -15

If we ADD the two inequalities we get: a + (-b) ≥ 30 + (-15)
Simplify to get: a - b ≥ 15

Inequalities of the same nature can be Added whereas, Inequalities of the opposite nature can be Subtracted

Since, we have 2 option only: \((a - b)\) or \((a + b)\)

\(a ≥ 30\)
\(b ≤ 15\)
\((a - b) ≥ 15\) ........... (Use the sign of first Inequality while subtracting)

Hence, option C

Why E is not an answer too. Instead of adding, we can subtract.
a - (-b) ≥ 30 - (-15)
a + b ≥ 45

And it matches answer E.
