Most of the developed countries in the world have one thing in common, they are all a democracy. The very essence of democracy allows the citizen to question various policies passed by the government. Questioning the rule of authority increases the quality of governance and prevents any totalitarian regime from coming into power. However, we need to analyse and understand various actions taken by the authority before questioning it.
Take North and South Korea for example, one is an authoritarian state ruled by a single dictator and the latter functions as a representative democracy. Prior to the Korean civil war both the countries were united but now there is a vast difference between both of them, economically and socially. South Korea has witnessed a rapid proliferation in economic development, the country has given birth to companies like Samsung and Hyundai which are the acme of their industry. North Korea on the other hand still struggles to feed a large fraction of their population. When constituents are allowed to participate in governence and policy making its results are far better since they vote on the best interest of their respective nation.
However, in a representative democracy , citizens vote for leaders who represent their best interest. Such leaders usually have a profound knowledge in the field of politics, economics and law. Hence in regards to certain cumbersome law it is best for those who have in-depth knowledge should take the decision. Constant questioning would also disrupt the flow of governance and would result in reduction of a country’s growth rate.
Concentration of power in the hands of few leads to corruption and disturbance, in order to prevent this citizens should question rules which are unjust and unfair. Whereas for other matters it is best that our elected leaders who are experts take decisions on behalf of the general public.
