Can anybody please provide me with feedback on this essay:
Prompt: People who commit crimes knowing that it is bad, should not be given any civil rights or even benefits from their own labour.
Many people consider criminals to be the worst people on worst and want them to abandon society. Criminals do indeed break the social contract of the society, and they may have hurt other innocents with their doing, but before deciding that what should be done to these criminals, one must consider the pros and cons of a punishment. Punishments are meant to make someone realize that he has done a wrongdoing, and he must feel sorry about that. If a criminal is deprived of his fundamental rights, what good this punishment can do to him except making him a more ruthless animal. So, depriving a criminal of his basic civil rights is not a feasible solution.
Consider a criminal who is a Nobel prize winner, but sometimes he drinks a lot and does driving recklessly even though he knows that what he is doing can be harmful not only to himself but to others as well. So, if such a person is deprived of his basic civil rights, one can easily guess that it will be a loss to society. Because he is an expert in his field and has won the Nobel prize, maybe he can do wonders and earns respect for not only himself but for his country as well. Similarly, if he is allowed to work but not allowed to take any credit, instead he has to do it for free, that person will work, simply because he has no incentive to work for someone else or even for his country, as he is not also given his basic civil rights. All he would want to do in that case will be more harm to people or left the country, or maybe the world. Recent surveys also show that the chance of committing a suicide increase as one who is respectable lose all his respect.
Similarly, we can take the example of terrorists in Afghanistan. As we know that, for the past seventeen or eighteen years, there is a war going on between America and the Taliban. Since Americans did kill their foremost leaders, captured their leaders and put them in death cells where no civil rights are given to such criminals, what good this has done. Nothing but more terrorists come into being.
So, we can see that depriving a person of his fundamental civil rights is not a viable option. Even a murderer should be given his fundamental civil liberties. As we have also seen in history that those criminals who are treated generously in prisons, became good society members in the end. So, based on above mentioned reasons and there can be a lot more, it is clear that a person who commits a crime should be given another chance, no matter how many chances, and should not be deprived of his basic civil rights because punishment is meant to make these people better, not to get rid of them.
