Re: What is the least integer k [#permalink]

1/3^k < 0.0005
3^k > 2000

2000 = 2 * 10 * 10 * 10 < 3 * 9 * 9 * 9 = 3^7

k = 7.

What is the least integer \(k\) such that \(\frac{1}{3^k}\) is less than \(0.0005\) ?

A. 6

B. 7

C. 666

D. 667

E. There is no such least integers

Remind that \(a > b\) is equivalent to \(\frac{1}{a} < \frac{1}{b}\) if both \(a\) and \(b\) are positive.
It means we should flip the direction of an inequality when we take reciprocals if both sides are positive.

\(0.0005 = \frac{5}{10000} = \frac{1}{2000}\)
\(\frac{1}{{3^k}} < 0.0005 = \frac{1}{2000}\) is equivalent to \(3^k > 2000\).
\(3^6 = (3^2)^3 = 9^3 = 9 \cdot 9 \cdot 9 = 81 \cdot 9 = 729\).
\(3^7 = 3 \cdot 729 = 2187 > 2000\).
Thus, the least integer such that \(\frac{1}{{3^k}} < 0.0005\) or \(3^k > 2000\), is \(7\).

Therefore, B is the right answer.
