1st blank is "unless" because terrier is a very active dog and it jumps on you like crazy so it's not something everyone like.
2nd blank is "Effusively" - unless you want the dog to pour lot of love on you by jumping you make no such movement.
3rd blank is "desperate" - St.Bernard is a lazy dog so it's not that jumpy on owners so you can read that contrast between those two dogs from their appearence.
