Re: Which of the following is 10 % less than 2? [#permalink]

10% of 2 is 2*0.9 = 18/10 = 1.8

2 1/2 - 7/10 = 5/3 - 7/10 = 18/10 = 1.8

answer: A
10 percent less than 2 means: 2 – 10/100 = 2 – 1/10 = 2 – 0.1 = 1.9
Either we can find the least option or we can calculate all of the options.
A equals 1/2 + 1 2/5 = ½ + 7/5 = 19/10 = 1.9 with is exactly 10% less that 2 and the answer.
B equals 5/6 + 1 1/3 = 5/6 + 4/3 = 13/6. That is obviously more than 1.9
C equals 1 2/3 + 3/10 = 5/3 + 3/10 = 59/30. That is obviously more than 1.9
D equals 2 1/6 – 2/5 = 13/6 – 2/5 = (65-12)/30 = 53/30.with is less than 1.9
E equals 2 ½ - 7/10 = 5/2 – 7/10 = 18/10 with is less than 19/10

According to you correct answer is 1,9 (answer A). In order to check your answer we can make the following steps:
1,9 is what percent less than 2? Thus, 1,9=x/100*2
1,9*100=2x
X=190/2
X=95 (hence 5% less).

OR you can use another approach
Percentage Change = (New - Old)/Old = Difference/Original
Percentage change = (1,9-2)/2= - 0,1/2 = -0,05, this means -0,05 is not the correct answer because we should find the answer, which is 10% less

can someone please provide a short cut for this question? I got the answer by computing the choices one by one which takes too long to solve the question.

I right away eliminated A and B, since they are too small, also eliminated D because it is too big. Finally, I had to solve C and E
C. 1 2/3 + 3/10 = 5/3 + 3/10 = 56/30 = 1,87
E. 2 1/2 - 7/10 = 5/2 - 7/10 = 18/10

firstly recognize the number that is 10% less than 2, which is 1.8, then use your advantageous calculator turning the fractions into decimals and quickly calculating.

Which of the following is 10 % less than 2?

A. \(\frac{1}{2} + 1 \frac{2}{5}\)

B. \(\frac{5}{6} + 1 \frac{1}{3}\)

C. \(1 \frac{2}{3} + \frac{3}{10}\)

D. \(2 \frac{1}{6} - \frac{2}{5}\)

E. \(2 \frac{1}{2} - \frac{7}{10}\)

General Rules TO Apply here, is to.

So, X% less than Y means = \(Y-(\frac{X}{100} * Y)\)

And for X% greater than Y means = \(Y + (\frac{X}{100} * Y)\)

Now apply 1st formula here.
